A heart surgeon with 25 years of experience and more than 5,000 open-heart surgeries in his career, speaks out about the huge mistake that he and his colleagues have been doing.
He explains that their believing that heart disease was caused by elevated blood cholesterol is wrong because the common treatment that includes medications to lower cholesterol and a proper diet that severely restricted fat intake is ineffective. His opinion is that the heart disease is a result of the inflammation of the artery wall and the treatment of heart diseases should be changed.
His statement is confirmed by the facts of the American Heart Association, which say that 75 million Americans currently suffer from heart disease, 57 million have pre-diabetes and 20 million have diabetes.
Actually, the inflammation causes cholesterol builds up in the walls of the blood vessels, which can lead to strokes and heart disease. In this situation should be inflammation treated and it’ll allow cholesterol to move freely throughout the body.
Because the inflammation is the body’s defense mechanism to a foreign invader like bacteria, viruses, and toxins, it is beneficial for protecting the system from their negative effects. However, if there is a chronic exposure to such invaders it can lead to chronic inflammation, too. This kind of inflammation is usually caused by the diet, which is low in fat and rich in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates. This diet constantly damages the blood vessels and leads to chronic inflammation.
Additionally, the chronic inflammation is most often caused by the excessive intake of omega-6 vegetable oils such as sunflower, soybean, and corn oil and highly processed carbohydrates.
When the consumption of such foods is repeated during the day, for years, it causes chronic inflammation in the body. Also, the intake of the simple carbohydrates such as sugar, increase the blood sugar levels, and the pancreas secretes insulin.
The main role of the pancreas is to drive sugar into each cell, but if cells are full, the glucose is accumulating in the body, blood sugar rises, and then it is stored as fat. The extra sugar molecules are attaching to various proteins and can injure the blood vessel wall, which exactly stimulates inflammation.
The processed foods are all rich in sugar and omega-6 oils, which provide a longer shelf life. They are an important part of cell membranes and it is important to be in a proper balance with omega-3.
If that ratio is imbalanced, the cell membrane produces chemicals known as cytokines, which are the reason for inflammation. As the modern diet leads to an extreme imbalance of these two fats (30:1 in favor of omega-6) it increases the amounts of cytokines and causes inflammation.
Because one of the bad sides of these foods is causing the weight gain it creates overloaded fat cells producing large quantities of pro-inflammatory chemicals.
The suggestions of this heart surgeon are to protect yourself by consuming more protein, more natural foods, and complex carbohydrates like colorful vegetables and fruits. The omega-6 fats like corn and soybean oil can be replaced with the olive oil or butter from grass-fed beef.
For that reason, eat healthy foods and forget about the processed foods that marked our era. Your focus should be on eating nutrient-dense foods and fresh and raw ones as often as possible.
This kind of diet will reverse the damage done to your arteries and your heart will be healthier.
