Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Others Recall Tainted Vegetables That Can Cause Fatal Infections [via FDA]

There is a warning about the companies across the USA, including Whole Foods Market, Albertsons, and Meijer that have issued dozens of food recalls in the recent time, which are contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, this bacteria weakens the immune system or causes fatal infections in young children and fragile adults.

Under consideration are the numerous products that contain vegetables sourced from Mann Packing of Salinas, Calif.

The biggest retail recalls were in the Meijer’s company. They recalled 39 fresh vegetable products, such as vegetable trays, asparagus spears, broccoli florets, and shareable autumn harvest salad.

These vegetables were sold in stores in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Mann Packing recalled nearly 100 products sold from Oct. 11 to Oct. 20, at retailers ranging from Walmart to Trader Joe’s in Canada and the USA.

The Whole Foods recalled salads from 10 northern California stores. Those foods were sold by the pound at salad bars between Sept. 28 and Oct. 20.

Tom Thumb, Randalls, and Albertsons stores in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas are recalling seafood meal bags, including numerous fish fillet and shrimp kits, which were with sell-by dates through Oct. 22 that were packaged in clear cooking bags and sold from refrigerated cases.

Questions of the customers may be raised to Albertsons Companies at 877-723-3929.

Safeway, Pak N’ Save and Vons stores in Hawaii, California, Colorado, Nevada, Nebraska, South Dakota, New Mexico, and Wyoming recalled certain fresh vegetable trays and cups, sold by dates through Oct. 24. They were packaged in clear plastic trays and cups of various sizes.

Seattle-based Triple B Corp. recalled stir-fry mixes and salad kits, sold in-store delis and used in schools, hospitals, and hotels in Washington and Oregon.

The concerns of consumers can contact Triple B at 206-577-985.

Triple-B recalled stir-fry kits, veggie trays with cauliflower, broccoli florets, veggie pack combos, which were sold in store delis in Alaska.

There is also the possibility of customers to contact the Mann Packing at 888-470-2681.

What is Listeria?

In order to proper food safety, everyone should be informed about the foodborne illness, such as listeriosis. This is a serious infection, which occurs after eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

That bacteria comes from the soil, water and some animals like poultry and cattle.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics show that around 1600 illnesses and 260 deaths annually occur in the United States, due to listeriosis.

Signs and Symptoms of Listeria

According to WebMD, in pregnant women, the infection can result in miscarriage, premature delivery, and serious infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The children and healthy adults rarely become seriously ill, because they are sometimes infected with L. monocytogenes. Some of the babies can be born with listeriosis if their mothers eat contaminated food during pregnancy.

What causes listeriosis?

Listeria monocytogenes is found in soil and water from where it is transferred to vegetables and they become contaminated.

Also, some of the animals can carry the bacteria and contaminate meats and dairy products. The same case is with the processed foods, such as soft cheeses and cold cuts, and unpasteurized (raw) milk or foods made from it.

Symptoms of Listeria

They include:

–           Fever

–           Sometimes diarrhea or nausea

–           Muscle aches

If the infection spreads to the nervous system, the symptoms may also include:

–           Headache

–           Confusion

–           Stiff neck

–           Convulsions

–           Loss of balance

How is listeriosis diagnosed?

The doctors diagnose Listeriosis basing it on a physical exam and medical history. You should be prepared to answer some questions when you visit the doctor, about your symptoms, foods you have recently eaten, and your home and work environments. It can be also followed by a blood test or spinal fluid test, which will confirm the diagnosis.
