The recipe of the Thieves Oil varies and dates back to the Middle Ages where they kept a group of traders safe from the Black Plague. They survived thanks to the mixtures made of the ingredients with antiseptic, antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

According to Gary Young’s study made in the 1990s, there are 17 different version of the “Story of Thieves” and each contains different amounts of different oils. This fascinated Gary to make plenty of researchers for the essential oils and make the perfect Thieves Oil blend for everyday use.

The “Thieves” lived in the 15th century and traded the products of cinnamon and cloves from India across Europe. At the time when the bubonic plague struck, because of the canceling the international shipping, they needed a way to support themselves.

As they knew about spices and their medicinal properties and believed they wouldn’t get sick from the dead bodies, they started selling the found jewelry, clothes, boots, pots, and pans – anything they could get their hands on to trade for food and money.

Because their repossession process was so lucrative it attracted attention to the King. He wanted to know their secret of how they succeeded to survive and ordered to bring some of them to the palace. He gave them a choice to share the secret or they will be burned at the stake. This is how their secret became open to the public, and we will share how to make 4 blends here.

  • a) Diffusing Thieves Oil

It is diffused to purify the air in your home, to acts aromatically, to support your lungs and sinuses and to eliminate odors.

*Note: Be careful with the cats and their surroundings, as they cannot process essential oils.  –

–           Strong solution – 1 drop of Thieves Oil for every ½ ounce of water used

–           Lessened solution – 1 drop per 1 oz.

  • c) Topical Thieves Oil

Combine 1 drop of Thieves Oil to 4 drops carrier oil. (Grapeseed, Coconut, Jojoba, Avocado or any healthy oil will act as a carrier)

This combination can be used topically. Some folks can use Thieves Oil without a carrier, but be sure that the skin is not too sensitive. It can be applied and massaged on your feet, neck, lower back, and behind your ears.

If it is rubbed on your feet daily it will boost your immune system.

  • d) Household Uses

Thieves Oil is a great all-around cleaner, as it possesses antibacterial properties.

To remove any stubborn, sticky buildup or even just to give a great, deep clean, add it to floor and countertops, or it can be added to laundry loads and dishwasher loads.

  • e) Massage Therapy

Prepare a mixture of 15 drops of Thieves Oil with 15 drops of carrier oil for massage over lungs, chest, and back in order to improve your respiratory system. When you massaged it into the back, thighs, and neck it will help you to relieve minor aches and pains that come with your daily routine. Additionally, it is used for relieving the insect bites.

  • f) Ingesting Thieves Oil

To a bottle of water add 1 drop of Thieves oil and drink all day long. This is a perfect remedy that cleans your digestive tract and supports a healthy immune system.

Another way is to add it to a cup of warm water and drink as a tea 15 minutes before eating.

You can also add 2-3 drops to 2 Tbsp. of water and gargle to relieve a sore or dry throat, or add 1 drop of Thieves Oil to 1 oz. of water and, by using a spray bottle, you can spray onto the back of your throat.
